The classic form of smudging is the slow burning of herbs and resins on charcoal. When the charcoal glows and turns white at the edges, you can begin applying the incense blend. Smudging with resins only is particularly well suited for charcoal, as they quickly and intensely release their characteristic fragrance in the high heat. A gentler way of smudging is the principle in the aroma lamp. Instead of the bowl, which is normally filled with essential oil and water, a special sieve is placed on the lamp.
